Abstraksi
Suriname is one of the southern regions of Indonesia and Suriname. Medical facilities in Suriname are limited. Maternal and adolescent health is a serious issue in both Indonesia and Suriname. The lack of knowledge about health, preventive efforts, use of herbal remedies, and limited access to healthcare are major obstacles. Moreover, diseases related to maternal and adolescent health often do not receive adequate attention, despite their potential fatal consequences. This is largely due to a lack of public awareness and inadequate access to information and healthcare. Healthcare services remain a primary challenge in improving maternal and adolescent health. Preliminary studies in Suriname, particularly among Indonesian descendants, reveal many cases related to maternal and adolescent health. One of the maternal health issues requiring urgent attention is the low rate of exclusive breastfeeding. According to the Department of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health, Pan American Health Organization (2022), Suriname has one of the lowest exclusive breastfeeding prevalence rates in the Americas at 8.9%, alongside Saint Lucia (3.5%), the Dominican Republic (4.5%), and Venezuela (7.1%). Breastfeeding is a fundamental aspect of maternal and infant health. It establishes a natural and profound bond between mother and child, offering unmatched benefits for both their physical and mental well-being. If mothers do not exclusively breastfeed their babies, negative consequences may arise, affecting maternal and infant health, family economic stability, and national human resources development in the future. The low rate of exclusive breastfeeding is primarily due to insufficient knowledge about breastfeeding and aggressive promotion of infant formula. Thus, breastfeeding education is an effective way to enhance maternal awareness and knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding. Good knowledge serves as the foundation for fostering a positive attitude and behavior toward breastfeeding. This forms the background of our international healthcare service project, themed "Maternal and Adolescent Health in Suriname", with the sub-theme "Breastfeeding and The Physical-Psychological Health of Mothers and Babies." The project was conducted through a digital-based educational approach (Zoom meetings). Objectives of the Community Partnership Program (PKM): Short-term outcome: Increase knowledge, awareness, and attitudes of the Lilydrop Wenica Suriname community regarding exclusive breastfeeding. Mid-term outcome: Enhance awareness and foster a positive attitude toward exclusive breastfeeding. Long-term outcome: Encourage behavioral change toward exclusive breastfeeding, ultimately improving maternal and infant health. Expected Outputs: Publication of an article in a nationally accredited journal (SINTA 5), media coverage in electronic platforms (e.g., Kompasiana).
